Oftálmica beta-adrenérgico agentes de bloqueio (também conhecido como beta-bloqueadores), em geral, não deve ser utilizado em doentes com um atual ou história de asma brônquica ou doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica. Topicamente aplicado beta-bloqueadores são absorvidos sistemicamente, com o potencial de produção clinicamente significativos efeitos sistêmicos, mesmo com baixa ou indetectável no plasma níveis. No trato respiratório, beta-bloqueio pode afetar adversamente a função pulmonar por contrariar a broncodilatação produzida por catecolamina estimulação dos receptores beta-2. Apesar de agentes com beta-1 seletividade (por exemplo, betaxolol) são considerados mais seguros em pacientes com bronchospastic doenças, cardioselectivity não é absoluto e pode ser perdido com doses maiores ou mais níveis plasmáticos.
