A amantadina pode precipitar ou exacerbar os sintomas psicóticos. Raramente, tentativas de suicídio e ideação suicida também têm sido relatados, alguns dos quais ocorreram em pacientes sem história prévia de doença psiquiátrica que estavam fazendo cursos de curta duração de amantadine a gripe. A terapia com amantadine deve ser administrado com cautela em pacientes com história de transtornos psiquiátricos, instabilidade emocional, ou de abuso de substância, e, especialmente, se eles são idosos. Pode ser prudente abster-se de dispensar grandes quantidades de amantadine a esses pacientes, para evitar overdose intencional, que é potencialmente fatal.
